Nice, the capital of the French Riviera
Built between the sea and the mountains, around one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the Bay of Angels, Nice is today the fifth largest city in France.
The city truly opened itself to the world in the second half of the 19th century, with an influx of aristocrats and leaders from across Europe, drawn by the beauty and climate of what was then a small Mediterranean town. After becoming French in 1860, Nice proudly showcases its distinct identity to visitors, forged by a history that stretches back to the pre-Roman Nikaia era.
The narrow streets of Nice's old town will transport you far from Provence, to somewhere in Italy. In Piazza Garibaldi, with its Turin-like feel, the statue of the hero of modern Italy stands imposingly.
